Teaching Students with Autism

Session Description

The number of children diagnosed on the autism spectrum has increased substantially and many of these students are in general education classrooms.  This course is designed to familiarize teachers with Autism Spectrum Disorder, create an understanding of the relative strengths and needs of students on the spectrum, and provide strategies for helping these students manage and overcome their challenges.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the sessions participants will know / be able to: 
  1.  Identify strategies to assist students with communication, sensory needs, repetitive behaviors, and transitions.
  2. Utilize assistive technology devices, Macbook,  iPad and smartphone apps that increase communication skills in the classroom for students with autism

Warm Up:

What is Autism?

Activity 1:

  • Identify the difference between a tantrum and a meltdown, share strategies to use during visible frustrations/meltdowns

  • Tantrum vs. Meltdown

  • How do I manage the behaviors that sometimes come along with a child on the spectrum

  • Strategies for calming methods
