Dealing with Difficult Parents

Session Description

We can work with kids all day, but when it comes to working with parents we sometimes cringe. However, true parental partnerships mean, that having conversations with parents, including tough ones, is essential. This session will focus on strategies and tips for having tough conversations with parents as well as working with those difficult parents. 

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the sessions participants will know / be able to: 
  1. Identify ways to be proactive with parent communication to reduce potential conflicts with parents. 
  2. Appropriately choose and execute  a plan of action based on a situation.
  3. Reflect on conversations with parents.

Activity 1: What are "Difficult Parents"?

What is a difficult parent exactly? We'll talk about five types of typical parents and some strategies that work for each of them.

Activity 2: How to Handle Parents

What do you need to do in advance of a parent conference? We'll give you specific techniques, what to say, what not to say, what to prepare and how to approach it.

Activity 3: Practice Scenarios

Practice what you learned with scenarios and opportunities to share ideas with a group of peers.
