Deep Dive: Physical Education

Session Description

This session will focus on specific content and instructional strategies for Physical Education.  We will explore how to use Social Media for resources and communication of student success, strategies for utilizing data to prove learning in K-12 PE classes, and activities to promote fun, physical activity and core subject learning that align with the National PE Standards.  Guest presenters include William Bode, 2017 SHAPE America Southern District High School PE Teacher of the Year, Gabe Ervin, 2016 NC Elementary PE TOY, and Joe Weaver, 2015 NC Elementary PE TOY.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the sessions participants will know / be able to: 
    1. Utilize social media for resources and best practice ideas for my own professional development, and to share the success of my students
    2. Develop a lesson incorporating content from other subject areas.
    3. Show the importance of data to prove learning in physical education
    4. Show different ways to assess learning with and without technology
    5. Elementary: Use data on my students to assist in providing the appropriate type of intervention to maximize student success.
    6. Secondary: Teach my students to track their physical education data and implement a plan to maximize their own success.
    7. Create instructional stations for PE or Health lessons.

                • Social Media in Physical Education

                • Social Media for Physical Education (45 minutes)

                      • What will I gain from spending time on these resources?

                      • How do other arts teachers use social media?

                      • How can social media be of value to me?

                  • Explore this list of PE Teachers/Organizations on Social Media

                  • Using this Graphic Organizer, list resources to use in your grade level/specific content

                • Exit Ticket: 3-2-1, complete the following questions and take a picture of it with your phone.  Save the picture for your Day 3 Product document

                  • 3 people you are going to follow from the Twitter Smore

                  • 2 resources you found to use from Twitter

                  • 1 question you still have

                Day 2

                • K-12 discuss and demonstrate assessments in PE

                • Show the importance of data to prove learning in our classes

                • feedback to create further lessons

                • Participate in activities to demonstrate how students can be actively assessed in PE


                Day 3

                Reflect

                • Swap Meet: Share something that made an impact on you from yesterday’s session. (10 minutes)

                • Makerspace: Use the time to create a lesson using assessment strategies from yesterday’s session. (70 minutes)


                Product Creation

                • Using SMORE or Google Doc, create a summary of your experience with the PE/Health Deep Dive.

                • Include the following:

                  • Your Twitter handle and a picture of your Twitter profile

                  • Link to your twitter account

                  • 3-2-1 reflection for Day 1 - 3 people you  are going to follow on Twitter, 2 resources you found to use from Twitter, 1 question you still have

                  • From Day 2: share something you learned in William Bode’s presentation that you can implement this school year

                  • Overall Reflection: What made this personalized PD beneficial to you as a PE teacher?


                Synchronized Swimming Session for Wednesday:

                • Presenter Gabe Ervin, 2016 NC Elementary PE Teacher of the Year, K-6 PE teacher Startown Elementary (Catawba Schools)

                • Presenter Joe Weaver, 2015 NC Elementary PE Teacher of the Year, K-6 PE teacher Balls Creek Elementary (Catawba Schools)

                • Participants of this session will have the opportunity to learn innovative and exciting activities that may be considered “off the wall”, strange, and unique, but will be loved by students of all ages.  While these activities are unique, each one aligns with national PE standards.  Many of the activities presented utilize homemade equipment that’s easy to make.  The activities presented will include skill based activities, games, and those that integrate core subject areas.  These activities will promote fun, physical activity and core subject learning.  Each activity has been kid tested and approved!
